We asked

«what are the best cities to visit in Campania?»

ChatGPT · gpt-5-6

Campania has a lot more than Naples and the Amalfi Coast. If you're choosing where to spend your time, these are the places I'd put on the shortlist:

Place Best for How long
Naples Food, history, nightlife, authentic city atmosphere 2-4 days
Sorrento Coastal scenery, relaxed base, day trips 2-3 days
Amalfi Dramatic coast, swimming, romantic atmosphere 1-2 days
Positano Iconic scenery, beaches, upscale atmosphere 1-2 days
Salerno Less touristy coastal city, convenient base 1-2 days
Caserta Royal palace & gardens ½-1 day
Pompeii Ancient Roman history ½-1 day
Ischia Thermal baths, beaches, island relaxation 2-3 days
Capri Scenery, boat trips, glamorous island atmosphere 1-2 days
Paestum Greek temples, archaeology, quieter south 1 day
Benevento Roman/Lombard history, inland Italy 1 day

My picks by travel style

🏛️ For history: Naples + Pompeii + Caserta + Paestum. Campania has an unusually concentrated mix of Greek, Roman, medieval and Bourbon heritage.

🌊 For the coast: Sorrento + Positano + Amalfi. The Amalfi Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, with towns including Positano, Amalfi, Maiori, Minori and Vietri sul Mare.

🍕 For food and city life: Naples is the obvious choice. Its historic center is UNESCO-listed, and the city is particularly important for Neapolitan cuisine and pizza.

🏝️ For a relaxing island trip: Ischia is particularly good if you want beaches and thermal waters; Capri is more about dramatic scenery and the iconic island experience.

🌿 For somewhere quieter: I'd look at Cilento, particularly around Paestum and the coastal towns south of Salerno. It's considerably less dominated by the international tourism machine than the Amalfi/Sorrento area.

If I were planning a first trip

I'd do Naples → Sorrento → Amalfi Coast → Paestum, with Pompeii as a day trip. That gives you a good mix of city + food + archaeology + dramatic coastline + beaches, without trying to cover the entire region.

One important distinction: Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento aren't really "cities" in the same sense as Naples-they're much smaller coastal towns. But they're among the places most travelers mean when they ask about the best places to visit in Campania.

If you tell me how many days you have (e.g. 4, 7, or 10) and whether you prefer beaches, food, history, nightlife, or scenery, I can map out the best Campania itinerary for you.
