We asked

«what are the best cities to visit in Sardinia?»

ChatGPT · gpt-5-6

If you’re choosing where to base yourself in Sardinia, I’d think less in terms of “best city” and more in terms of what kind of trip you want. Sardinia’s official tourism site highlights very different experiences across the south, west, east, and north of the island.

🌊 Cagliari - best for a city + beach trip

Cagliari

The island’s capital is probably the easiest all-around choice if you want restaurants, nightlife, history, beaches, and a real city atmosphere. You can explore the historic districts, museums and parks, then reach the coast without needing to change hotels.

Choose it for: first-time visitors, food, culture, nightlife, convenience.

🏰 Alghero - best for atmosphere + beaches

Alghero

One of my top choices for a holiday base. Alghero has a beautiful historic center, waterfront promenades, beaches nearby, and easy access to Capo Caccia and the Grotta di Nettuno. The scenic road toward Bosa is also excellent.

Choose it for: romantic trips, couples, old-town atmosphere, sunsets, beaches.

🌅 Bosa - best small town

Bosa

A colorful riverside town with a medieval character that feels quite different from Sardinia's resort areas. It's particularly appealing if you like scenic streets, local food, wine and photography. The regional tourism site specifically highlights its setting along the Temo and its connection with the spectacular Alghero-Bosa coastal road.

Choose it for: a charming 1-2 night stop, couples, slower travel.

🏖️ San Teodoro - best for beaches

San Teodoro

A good base in northeastern Sardinia if your priority is beautiful beaches and a lively summer holiday. It's also well positioned for exploring the northeast.

Choose it for: swimming, beaches, summer nightlife, younger travelers.

⛵ Olbia - best for exploring northeast Sardinia

Olbia

Olbia itself is less about a spectacular historic center and more about location and access. It's a useful base for exploring the Costa Smeralda, San Teodoro, beaches and the La Maddalena area. Sardinia's tourism authority lists Olbia among its key destinations in the northeast.

Choose it for: road trips, airport convenience, Costa Smeralda access.

🏛️ Oristano - best for history + quieter Sardinia

Oristano

A less-touristy choice with excellent access to the Sinis Peninsula, Tharros, Cabras and some remarkable beaches. Italy's official tourism site highlights both Oristano's historic center and the archaeological and coastal attractions around it.

Choose it for: archaeology, local culture, quieter travel.

🏔️ Nuoro - best for authentic inland Sardinia

Nuoro

If you want something beyond beaches, Nuoro gives you access to the island's mountainous interior and traditional Sardinian culture. The regional tourism authority describes central Sardinia around Nuoro and the Supramonte/Gennargentu as the island's rugged, traditional heart.

Choose it for: hiking, traditions, food, mountains, getting away from resort tourism.

My practical shortlist

Place Best for
Cagliari 🥇 First trip / city + beach
Alghero ❤️ Atmosphere + beaches
Bosa 🏘️ Charming small town
San Teodoro 🏖️ Beaches
Olbia 🚗 Northeast road trip
Oristano 🏛️ History + quieter beaches
Nuoro 🏔️ Mountains + authentic culture

If you have 7-10 days, I wouldn't stay in just one city. A very good route would be Cagliari → Alghero/Bosa → northeast Sardinia, giving you three distinctly different sides of the island.

If you tell me how many days you're going, whether you're renting a car, and whether you care more about beaches, food, nightlife, or scenery, I can suggest a specific Sardinia itinerary.
