We asked

«what are the best cities to visit in Sicily?»

ChatGPT · gpt-5-6

Sicily has a lot of great options, but the best city depends on what kind of trip you want. For a first visit, I'd focus on these:

City Best for How long
Palermo Food, history, markets, nightlife 2-3 days
Taormina Scenery, romance, Greek theater, beaches 1-2 days
Siracusa / Ortigia Beautiful old town, history, atmosphere 2 days
Catania Etna, food, lively city life 1-2 days
Noto Baroque architecture, elegant small-town atmosphere ½-1 day
Cefalù Beach + charming historic center 1-2 days
Agrigento Greek temples and archaeology 1 day
Ragusa Baroque architecture, quieter atmosphere 1 day

🌋 1. Catania - best base for eastern Sicily

Catania is energetic, atmospheric and sits right beneath Mount Etna. Its historic center is famous for Sicilian Baroque architecture, markets and food, while Etna makes it particularly good for combining a city trip with nature.

Don't miss: Piazza del Duomo, the fish market, Via Etnea, and an Etna excursion.

🏛️ 2. Palermo - best for culture and food

Palermo is probably the city I'd choose if you want the most distinctly Sicilian urban experience. Its history reflects Arab, Norman, Spanish and Italian influences, with spectacular churches and palaces alongside lively street markets and an excellent food scene.

Don't miss: Palermo Cathedral, Norman Palace & Palatine Chapel, Ballarò/Capo markets, Teatro Massimo and Monreale nearby.

🌊 3. Siracusa / Ortigia - best for atmosphere

Syracuse is particularly special because of Ortigia, its gorgeous historic island. Ancient Greek ruins, Baroque buildings, sea views and atmospheric piazzas are packed into a relatively walkable area. Syracuse is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Don't miss: Piazza Duomo, the Arethusa Spring, Temple of Apollo, Ortigia waterfront and the Neapolis archaeological park.

🌅 4. Taormina - best scenery

Taormina is the classic postcard choice: perched above the Ionian Sea, with the Greek Theatre providing spectacular views toward the coast and Etna. You can also descend toward Isola Bella for swimming and beaches.

It's more polished and tourist-oriented than Palermo or Catania, but the setting is exceptional.

🏛️ 5. Noto - best Baroque town

Noto is small but spectacular. It's considered the capital of Sicilian Baroque, with honey-colored palaces and churches concentrated around a very walkable center.

It's especially good as part of a Noto → Modica → Ragusa road trip.

🏖️ 6. Cefalù - best beach + town combination

Cefalù combines a beautiful sandy beach with a compact medieval center and a dramatic mountain backdrop. It's a particularly easy addition to a Palermo trip; the official tourism site also highlights Cefalù among Sicily's notable destinations.

🏺 7. Agrigento - best for ancient Greece

Agrigento is worth visiting primarily for the Valley of the Temples, one of Sicily's great archaeological attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It's less about the city itself and more about the extraordinary archaeological landscape surrounding it.

🍷 8. Ragusa - best for a quieter Baroque experience

Ragusa is divided between modern Ragusa and atmospheric Ragusa Ibla, the older Baroque district rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake.

If it were my first 7-8 days

I'd do:

Catania → Taormina → Noto → Siracusa/Ortigia → Palermo

with Cefalù as a day trip from Palermo.

That gives you a really good mix of Etna + dramatic scenery + Baroque towns + ancient history + beaches + food + big-city Sicilian culture without trying to cover the entire island. Sicily's official tourism resources similarly distinguish a particularly rich eastern route around Catania/Etna, Taormina, Syracuse and Noto from the western route centered on Palermo, Trapani and Agrigento.

If you tell me how many days you have and whether you're more interested in beaches, food, history, nightlife, or scenery, I can map out the ideal Sicily itinerary.
