We asked

«what are the most beautiful villages in Liguria?»

ChatGPT · gpt-5-6

Liguria has two very different kinds of beautiful villages: colorful seaside villages and stone medieval hill villages. The official Ligurian tourism authorities list dozens of historic borghi, including 25 that belong to I Borghi più belli d’Italia.

If I were making a beauty-focused shortlist, I'd look at these:

🌊 Most beautiful seaside villages

  1. Vernazza - The classic Cinque Terre view: pastel houses packed around a tiny harbor, cliffs, vineyards and sea. The Cinque Terre villages are a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
  2. Portovenere - Dramatic and romantic, with colorful waterfront houses, a medieval church perched over the sea and spectacular views toward the islands.
  3. Noli - One of the best choices if you want a real historic seaside town rather than a purely scenic viewpoint: medieval towers, narrow caruggi, castle and a lovely bay.
  4. Laigueglia - Small, colorful and wonderfully atmospheric, with a traditional fishing-village feel and beaches right beside the historic center.
  5. Tellaro - Tiny and exceptionally picturesque, built into the rocks above the Gulf of Poets. It's officially among Italy's Borghi più belli.

🏰 Most beautiful medieval hill villages

  1. Finalborgo - One of my strongest recommendations for medieval atmosphere: intact walls, towers, gates, stone lanes and beautiful little squares.
  2. Cervo - A spectacular medieval village climbing a hillside above the Mediterranean, especially beautiful at sunset.
  3. Apricale - Stone houses and winding lanes in the hills behind Sanremo; much quieter and more atmospheric than the famous coastal spots.
  4. Triora - A dramatically situated mountain village with labyrinthine caruggi, stone architecture and extraordinary mountain scenery. Italy's tourism portal highlights its distinctive atmosphere and history.
  5. Montemarcello - A tiny hilltop village overlooking the Magra valley and Gulf of La Spezia; particularly good for views and a peaceful atmosphere.

⭐ If you only have time for five

I'd make the trip around:

Vernazza → Portovenere → Noli → Finalborgo → Cervo

That gives you five quite different experiences rather than five versions of the same village.

And if you want something less touristy, I'd swap Vernazza and Portovenere for Apricale, Triora, and Montemarcello. Liguria's official tourism material specifically emphasizes that its inland villages offer a very different, more traditional side of the region.

If you tell me how many days you have and whether you'll have a car, I can also give you a 2-5 day itinerary of Liguria's prettiest villages, including where to stay and the most scenic drives.
